PG&E Will Be Using Helicopters To Check Lines In Eastern Shasta County

Residents in Eastern Shasta County may see some low flying helicopters. They’ll be flying at 2-to-300 feet along electrical distribution lines checking on drought-stricken trees for PG&E. On Monday between 8AM and 4PM flights will take place north and west of Lake Britton, near Baum Lake and Cassel, and areas west of Burney. Foresters will be riding in the copters to spot trees that are threatening power lines. Trees identified from the air will later be inspected on the ground, and then the landowners will be contacted to schedule tree work. On Thursday a federal judge threatened to force PG&E to hire more tree trimmers to reduce the chances of its electrical grid igniting fires in Northern California. The judge said he expects more precautions to be taken following a statement on Wednesday when the utility acknowledged that as many as 22,000 trees may still be creating fire hazards. PG&E has asserted it can safely maintain the millions of trees in its territory.
