Voters In Tehama County Will Consider A 1 Cent Sales Tax Increase

Tehama County is asking it’s citizens for more money. On the March 3rd ballot, voters will decide whether to raise the county’s sales tax rate by one cent. To deal with a budget shortfall, 1.5 Million Dollars has been moved from the county’s reserve fund to the general fund. In 2020, it’s estimated there will be a $4 Million deficit if current staffing levels and programs are to be maintained. Among the factors cited for the money crunch include costs for a 64-bed jail expansion that will add 2.7 Million Dollars a year to operate. Unlike Shasta County’s Measure A, which is a specific tax, Measure G is a general tax increase, which only requires a vote of 50 percent plus one to pass. If it passes, the tax rate county-wide would be 8.25 percent, while Red Bluff’s would be 8.5 percent and Corning’s would increase to 8.75 percent.
