Teen Accused Of Trinity County Murder Being Housed In Tulare County

Trinity County is having a hard time finding lodging for a young murder defendant. The Trinity Journal says that 17-year-old Michael Hastey has been incarcerated in juvenile halls in Tehama, Shasta and Trinity Counties, but he apparently has repeatedly assaulted other juvenile inmates, as well as a custodial officer. During a hearing last week a judge ordered him to be transferred to adult jail. He’s going to be tried as an adult but because he’s still 17 he can’t be placed with adult inmates prior to conviction. The trouble is finding a jail that can accommodate him. For now he’s being held at Tulare County Jail. Hastey is accused in the stabbing death last January of 28-year-old Nathan Purdue, reportedly because he thought Purdue was making advances towards his girlfriend. She and Hastey were apparently at Hastey’s home in Weaverville when she told him she had kissed Perdue, who asked her to call him if things didn’t work out with Hastey. Upon hearing that, Hastey reportedly grabbed a knife, stormed out of the house to find Purdue and stabbed him multiple times. Hastey will be in courtFfebruary 19th to enter a plea.
