Siskiyou County Traffic Stop Results in Indictment

Two people from Bakersfield have been indicted by a federal grand jury, accused of getting caught with a huge amount of drugs in Siskiyou County. The CHP pulled over a car for tailgating a big rig on northbound Interstate 5. Once they stopped, the officer started asking questions because 26-year-old Luis Hernandez-Guzman and 22-year-old Fernanda Jasmin Ayala-Zamora seemed uneasy. There were glaring inconsistencies in their stories about where they were going and what they were doing. They were asked if they would consent to a search of the car, and officers say permission was granted. During the search, officers noticed the carpeting on the passenger floorboard did not match, so they pulled it back, revealing a hidden compartment. That’s where a methamphetamine stash was allegedly found with a total weight of more than 24 pounds. Under the passenger seat, officers reportedly found a kilo- which is 2-point-2 pounds -of heroin. Both Hernandez-Guzman and Ayala-Zamora are charged with conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute meth and heroin. If convicted in federal court, they each face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a possibility of life, as well as fines of up to $10 million.
