It may not come as a surprise, but the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office has reported in increase drug-related crime in the past 6 years. They filed 1429 drug related criminal cases last year. That is 271 more cases then were filed in 2013. That’s a 24 percent increase in the total. However, the proportion of those charges that are classified as misdemeanors has increased dramatically. In 2013, just over a thousand cases were felonies. In 2019, about the same number were classified as misdemeanors. In 2014 Proposition 47 converted most drug crimes from felony offenses to misdemeanors.
