Solid waste disposal and water will cost more in the City of Redding after the city council voted for an increase Tuesday night. It will cost the average ratepayer $3-4 Dollars more per month under the new plan, which will increase rates by 12% for solid waste and 16% for both water and wastewater, implemented gradually over a four year period starting next month. The money raised will be used mostly for large infrastructure projects and for state mandated recycling programs. About 14 percent of ratepayers cast a protest vote by mail prior to the public hearing to raise rates, but it would have taken a 50 percent plus one vote to overturn the wishes of the council.
