Update: Sheriff’s Sergeant Fatally Shoots Suspect After Pursuit

Redding Police have confirmed some details about an officer involved shooting that occurred Tuesday in the Ono area. Shasta County Sheriffs Deputies were called to a home on Denise Way in Cottonwood for a welfare check a little after 12:30PM. A woman had called Shasta County Sheriffs Deputies reporting that 41-year-old Thomas Barbosa was acting irrationally and was causing a disturbance. While the woman was on the phone she advised dispatchers that she was gathering her belongings and was leaving the residence with two juveniles because she feared for their safety. The woman left the residence and remained on the phone with deputies. She said that Barbosa was following them in a separate vehicle and deputies told her to drive to the Auction Yard in Cottonwood to meet up with responding deputies. When deputies arrived, Barbosa fled the area in a Ford F-150 pickup truck and deputies began a pursuit. He failed to yield and deputies called for help from a CHP helicopter. Once the helicopter arrived the CHP followed the pickup on Platina Road for about 15 minutes while the ground deputies stopped pursuing Barbosa. As the pickup approached Nono Road Barbosa apparently made a U-turn and drove up a small embankment on the north side of Platina Road. The pickup went through a barbed wire fence and Barbosa stopped on the top of the embankment that was facing a large cliff. Barbosa stopped for a few minutes and than according to authorities he drove off the cliff. The vehicle rolled several times and came to rest on its driver side with the roof resting against a large tree. Ground deputies were able to arrive on scene and climbed down the cliff to help Barbosa who was conscious. He apparently refused the deputies commands and armed himself with a large knife. Over the next several minutes deputies tried to negotiate with him, but he apparently refused to drop the knife. Eventually a Shasta County Sheriff’s Sergeant fired one round from a .223 caliber rifle, striking Barbosa. Deputies began rendering medical aid and additional medical personnel also arrived to assist. Barbosa was pronounced deceased at the scene.
