Newsom Makes Homelessness Top Issue In 2020

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California’s governor used his biggest platform to make homelessness the state’s top issue in 2020. Gov. Gavin Newsom delivered his annual State of the State address on Wednesday. Governors typically use the speech to tout dozens of issues before a joint session of the state Legislature amid statewide media coverage. But Newsom used his speech to focus solely on homelessness. He called for the state to make it easier for local governments to force the mentally ill into treatment. And he said the state should treat housing as a health care issue. Democrats and Republicans praised his speech.
