Redding May See Driest February Since 1988

With February shaping up to be the driest on record, with no recorded precipitation in Redding so far, the question comes up about the rainfall potential for March. Historical records from the National Weather Service show that the area could see significant rain…or not. In 1971, February’s rain totaled about four tenths of an inch. In March of that year, more than 7 and a half inches fell. The driest February until now was in 1988, with .14 inches. In March of that year, only about a half inch fell. Of the driest Februaries since 1896, only 3 of the precipitation totals the following month were above the average of four and a third inches. However, following each of the 10 driest Februaries since 1896, the next month was wetter.
