Tribes Plan To Protest Ahead Of Meeting On Delta Tunnels

Governor Gavin Newsom’s Administration is looking into reviving Jerry Brown’s vision of tunneling under the delta to send massive volumes of North State water to the south. As with proposals for new dams, diversions and other changes in water policy, the people in the North State at the source of all that water are rarely asked for their opinions on such important matters, although the tunnel would be capable of sending 6,000 cubic feet per second to the south. Governor Newsom has been under tremendous pressure from Southern California interests such as the powerful Westlands Water District to increase diversions from the Sacramento River and Trinity River Watersheds. A series of seven public hearings had been planned concerning the delta tunnel, but it took a fight by a coalition of tribes to get a hearing scheduled in the North State. It will be held in Redding at the Turtle Bay Sheraton Hotel Monday night from 6PM to 8PM. A group organized by Yurok, Hoopa Valley, Karuk, Pit River, Miwok and several other tribes are planning a rally starting at 5:30PM on the auditorium lawn.
