Deputies Find No Evidence Of Shooting In Mountain Gate

A report of a shooting in the Mountain Gate area turned out to be unfounded. At 6 O’clock Thursday night, 60-year-old Larry Ackernecht went into the 76 station on Wonderland Boulevard reporting that three people had been shot. He’s speech and hearing impaired so it was difficult for the clerk to understand him. When deputies arrived, Ackernecht told them the shooting had taken place at a vacant property just south of the Mountain Gate Fire Station. Deputies checked out the location and talked to nearby residents, to no avail. Dispatchers located family members who live nearby and they were able to translate for Ackernecht. It was eventually determined that he may have gotten the story second hand from an unreliable source. Later it was learned that Ackernecht had reported a similar unfounded incident to Redding Police some time in the past.
