California Swamped By Jobless Claims; LA Virus Cases Rise

LOS ANGELES (AP) – California says it has hired retired state workers and transferred other employees to help process an avalanche of over 1 million unemployment claims because of a surge of job losses from the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement came Thursday as Los Angeles saw a 50% jump in newly confirmed coronavirus cases. A public health official in Los Angeles County urged people to take recommended precautions or the cases there could reach 1 million within weeks. A tally kept by Johns Hopkins University says California had more than 3,800 confirmed cases and 81 deaths.
