A man has been formerly sentenced for murder, and he also received a sentence almost as severe for attacking two jail guards. 28-year-old Christopher McHatton was found guilty by a jury in March for beating 37-year-old Steven Michael Johnson to death with a hammer at a house on Bechelli Lane last July. While he was awaiting trial he attacked two correctional deputies in Shasta County Jail in October with a broom handle. He kept fighting until more deputies got him under control. On May 1st McHatton pled no contest to five felony counts from the case. On Friday McHatton was sentenced to 16 years 8 months for the jail attack and another 16 years to life for the murder. The sentences are to be served consecutively.
