Update: Murder Suspect Captured After Standoff In Corning

Corning Police arrested a murder suspect after a standoff Friday morning that left the suspect with a gunshot wound. Authorities from several agencies went to a residence on the 1200 block of East Street at about 6:30AM to serve an arrest warrant on 36-year-old Elfego Chavez-Acevedo. Officers say that at about 7AM Chavez-Acevedo spotted officers and attempted to escape. At that time the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office says that a Red Bluff Police Officer fired two rounds from his duty rifle that struck the suspect in the upper arm. A K9 was also deployed, but the suspect was able to get away and hid in a nearby shed. He barricaded himself in the shed along with his girlfriend Diana Munoz. The SWAT Team was called and after negotiating with Chavez-Acevedo for some time he eventually surrendered. He was taken to Enloe Hospital in Chico to be treated for his gunshot wound and for dog bites before he was booked into the Tehama County Jail. Munoz was arrested as well for being an accessory to murder. Chavez-Acevedo was wanted on murder charges after apparently shooting a man at the Red Bluff FoodMaxx in August.
