A Redding man has been found guilty of second degree murder by a Shasta County jury for a death he caused while driving drunk. On the evening of January 29th of last year, 27-year-old Diana Elizabeth Schalk of Pembroke, Kentucky was driving a Chevy S10 pickup on Highway 299 east of Grizzly Gulch Road near the Whiskeytown scales when she was struck head-on by a Toyota pickup that had drifted over the double-yellow center line of the highway. Schalk was taken by helicopter to Mercy Hospital, but she died of her injuries. The driver of the Toyota was 43-year-old Hawk Blaze Bergstrom. He suffered major injuries. When the CHP arrived on scene, Bergstrom was given a breathalyzer test that showed a blood alcohol level exceeding .25%, more than 3 times the legal limit. Bergstrom has a prior DUI from 2015 as well. He was convicted Tuesday and will be sentenced June 18th, when he faces up to 15-years-to-life in state prison.
