The Shasta County Board of Supervisors has voted to require a little more order in their proceedings. Recent meetings have become loud and raucous with people expressing their strong opinions or mounting profanity-laced personal verbal attacks on board members or other public speakers. Three hours of public comment was heard Tuesday concerning the maintaining of protocol, and whether any such rules represent a violation of First Amendment free speech rights. Supervisors voted 3 to 2 in favor of the rules, which say signs brought into the chambers must be held in people’s hands, not hung on the walls, and they can’t be larger than 18 by 24 inches. Also, the general noise level must be kept at a minimum and those who wish to stand up must stand in the back of the room.
