An area of Burney was threatened by fire over the weekend but, incredibly, no structures were lost. The River Fire broke out near Pit River Casino before 1pm Saturday, prompting the evacuation of more than 40 homes located across Burney Creek from the casino. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office lifted all the evacuations at around 5pm. The fire was contained at a little over 20 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
