Woman Killed In Crash On Highway 299 Near Salyer

A Willow Creek woman died in a crash in Trinity County, apparently unrelated to a hit-and-run crash at the same location. At 4:50AM Saturday, 62-year-old Daryl Howard called 9-1-1 from the crash site off Highway 299 near Salyer. It was raining and he had been driving westbound when he drifted off the road and over the edge and the right front of the Subaru slammed into a large Oak Tree. The 68-year-old woman in the passenger seat had not been wearing her seatbelt and she suffered fatal injuries. Howard had major injuries, including a broken wrist. Sometime after that crash, a westbound Toyota Camry drifted off the road, collided with several small Oak Trees and came to rest near the wrecked Subaru. The male driver of the Toyota made contact with Howard, then fled the scene before the CHP arrived.
