Visitors to Lower Clear Creek should know about a dramatic increase in flow coming this weekend. A major federal rehabilitation project was completed last month on Clear Creek, restoring 2 miles of stream channel below Whiskeytown Dam. Though it had once been diverted and exploited by miners, Clear Creek now has the potential to be one of the most highly productive habitats for naturally produced Salmon and Steelhead in California. To encourage Spring Run Chinook Salmon to make their way upstream to spawn, and to protect their Roe, a pulse flow is being done. Starting overnight Sunday the flow will increase from about 150 cubic feet per second to around 500 C.F.S. by Tuesday. On Thursday it should be back to 150 C.F.S. The Department of Reclamation says the pulse flow does not require additional stored water beyond normal operations.
