Charges have been filed against three people for a fight in Downtown Redding last month that injured an opponent of the Shasta County supervisor recall campaign. Red Bluff bar owner Carlos Zapata, who has sharply criticized the Shasta County Board of Supervisors and pressed for their recall, and Nathan “Blaze” Pinkney, who has made parody videos in which he impersonates Zapata and ridicules the “Red, White and Blueprint” group, had been taunting each other through social media. On May 4th, an altercation in Downtown Redding began in the restaurant where Pinkney worked and ended in a nearby alleyway. Pinkney was left with a black eye from the incident. The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office has reviewed the case and Monday filed misdemeanor charges of battery and disturbing the peace by fighting against Zapata and his companions, Christopher Meagher and Elizabeth Bailey. Meagher faces additional charges for an incident over the weekend. At 1:30AM Saturday morning a 73-year-old man was beaten unconsciousness and left on the sidewalk in front of the Tropics bar on South Market Sstreet. That assault was caught on surveillance video, which also shows other patrons of the bar coming to the aid of the injured man. Meagher was arrested on Sunday by Redding Police. The D.A.’s Office has elevated the charges to felony assault by force likely to produce great bodily injury, felony elder abuse, and personal infliction of great bodily injury. Elizabeth Bailey is charged with being an accessory after the fact.
