Kayaker Who Apparently Drowned Near Red Bluff Identified

A kayaker who apparently drowned in the Sacramento River in Tehama County on Friday has been identified by the Sheriff’s Office as 52-year-old Matthew Lee Powers of Red Bluff. At around 10AM Powers was kayaking with a friend and when they reached the China Rapids near Red Bluff, his kayak overturned. His friend saw Powers struggling to stay above the surface and yelled at him to swim toward the bank. Powers was not wearing a life vest and his friend threw him his own, but Powers kept trying to stay with his kayak and was pulled underwater. The Sheriff’s Office, Cal-Fire and the CHP searched by air, boat and on foot but Power’s body was not found. He’s listed as a missing person.
