Jones Joins Protest Against Shasta County DA At County Courthouse

Dozens of people turned out in front of the Shasta County Courthouse Wednesday to show their support for political activist Carlos Zapata and to protest some actions by District Attorney Stephanie Bridget. Charges were filed last month against Zapata and two others for a fight in Downtown Redding that injured an opponent of the Shasta County supervisor recall campaign. Zapata and Nathan “Blaze” Pinkney, who has made parody videos in which he impersonates Zapata and ridicules the “Red, White and Blueprint” group, had been taunting each other through social media. On May 4th, an altercation began in the restaurant where Pinkney worked and ended in a nearby alleyway. Pinkney was left with a black eye from the incident. The DA’s Office eventually filed misdemeanor charges of battery and disturbing the peace by fighting against Zapata and his companions, Christopher Meagher and Elizabeth Bailey. On Wednesday protesters alleged that the charges against Zapata are politically motivated and unjustified, but surveillance footage just posted by a News Cafe supports the version of events told by Pinkney and seems to contradict some of the story related in a Redding Police press release. Among the protesters Wednesday was Supervisor Patrick Jones, who joined the others in criticizing the DA’s Office for sending investigators to the homes of recall organizers seeking evidence for a complaint filed with the California Fair Political Practices Commission. That investigation is still pending.
