A Redding attorney has been convicted for an attack against his family with a splitting maul, which left his wife in critical condition. 75-year-old Theodore Loos is a former attorney for the Shasta County Public Defender’s Office. In June of 2019 Redding Police were called to a home on Galway Street by a child reporting that her father had struck her mother with an axe. She said that she and her brother were also attacked, and her father was currently trying to stab himself with a knife. Officers arrived and detained Loos. His son said he awoke to Loos standing in the doorway of his bedroom holding a splitting maul. He said Loos tried to hit him with the blunt end of the maul, but he dodged the blow and suffered only minor injuries. The girl said she woke up to her brother screaming and saw her father attacking him. When she screamed at him to stop, he turned on her and struck her in the head with the blunt end of the axe. Both children took refuge in their mother’s room and found her suffering from massive wounds to her head and face. Loos came in the room and the girl ran to a neighbor’s house to call for help. The boy stayed behind and got the ax away from his father. The children both sustained minor injuries but their mother suffered life threatening injuries requiring surgery. Loos has reached a plea deal that dropped many of the charges and removed the “willful and premeditated” allegation. He’ll be sentenced on August 23rd and remains in jail on $1.5 Million bail.
