Experienced Cliff Jumper Killed After Failed Jump Into Lake Britton

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team has recovered the body of a man who apparently drowned after jumping into Lake Britton. Wednesday afternoon deputies were called to the Highway 89 bridge over Lake Britton near Burney. They talked to the victim’s friends who told them that the man was an experienced cliff and bridge jumper. They had filmed him jumping off the bridge and the video showed the man attempting a flipping maneuver. He apparently landed in the water awkwardly, and did not resurface. The Sheriff’s Dive Team was called in and searched the area under the bridge for several hours. At about 7:45PM the man’s body was found deceased about 37 feet below the surface in dark and muddy water. The dead man, who was apparently from the Reno area, has not been identified pending notification of next of kin.
