SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A legislative panel has approved an audit of the funding plan for Gov. Jerry Brown’s nearly $16 billion plan to bore two massive tunnels under the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Lawmakers on the Joint Legislative Audit Committee on Wednesday also decided to have California’s state auditor investigate prison suicides, University of California spending and certain charter schools. A recent spike in suicides at a women’s prison east of Los Angeles spurred the proposal to have auditors examine corrections officials’ efforts to prevent inmate suicides. Lawmakers’ approval of an audit of the University of California president’s budget is part of a long-running financing fight. The committee rejected a Republican lawmaker’s request for an audit into Democratic Attorney General Kamala Harris’ handling of firearms programs as she runs for the U.S. Senate.
