Investigators Say Weekend Fire Was Intentionally Set

Redding fire investigators say a fire in North Redding Saturday started in a large well established homeless encampment. A little after 2 O’clock Saturday afternoon firefighters were called to a wooded area behind the Fed-Ex building off of George Drive. As a large smoke column started growing firefighters were hampered by limited access to the area. Once they got through they were quickly able to run hose line and extinguish the flames. The fire was held to just under an acre. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a heat-related injury. Fire Inspector Craig Wittner says the fire was human caused and is still under investigation.
