Crews Finish 7 Year Buckhorn Safety Project

A mountain has been moved amid a series of engineering marvels to bring about the completion of the Cal-Trans Buckhorn Corridor Safety Improvement Project west of Whiskeytown on Highway 299. Over the course of seven years more than 3 Million cubic yards of dirt was moved by a nearly constant stream of trucks between the top and bottom portions of the roadway. That’s nearly as much material as is contained in Hoover Dam. The 6.8 mile stretch of highway was shortened by 1.4 miles and more than 50 curves were eliminated. Safety improvements include a continuous truck lane for the last 4 miles going uphill, a truck lane for downhill passing at the base of the hill, the addition of 8-foot shoulders and a wide paved area for chain removal and installation. The series of projects cost a total of 91-Million Dollars.
