SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – California voters have narrowly voted to reject a ballot initiative that could have threatened two of Gov. Jerry Brown’s megaprojects. The latest results reported Tuesday show voters heeded Brown’s calls against Proposition 53, rejecting it by a 51-to-49 percent margin. The proposal would have required California to get voter approval on any state projects requiring the sale of $2 billion or more in revenue bonds. The state’s nonpartisan legislative analyst says Brown’s plans for high-speed rail and giant twin water tunnels were among the few projects big enough to qualify. The Democratic governor campaigned against the ballot initiative, arguing that it would limit local control of projects. Stockton farmer Dean “Dino” Cortopassi, who brought the measure to the ballot, denied that, saying it would provide financial oversight.
