Corning Carjacker/Kidnapper At Large

When a teenager showed up at a Corning home with stab wounds Sunday night, it proved to be the tip of an iceberg. The unidentified 16-year-old Hispanic boy sought help at a home on Mary Street in Corning. The homeowner called for medical and law enforcement and the boy was rushed away to be treated at a hospital for several knife wounds to his head and neck. The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office says the boy had been assaulted during a carjacking and kidnapping. The car and its owner, 18-year-old Efren Castillo, were still missing. His family had gotten a phone call from someone demanding ransom money, but without specific instructions. The car was spotted in Orland and Willows very early Monday morning by police who didn’t know at that time that it was stolen. At around 2am Monday a Glenn County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the car near Artois and tried to stop it. A pursuit involving Orland Police and the CHP continued onto Highway 99W until the driver lost control and crashed into the vacant Blue Gum Restaurant near Willows. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Marco Oveido of Corning, took off on foot but was taken down by a K9. Detectives got help from several agencies as they tried to find the victim, Efrom Castillo. At 7 o’clock Monday night they learned he was being held in an apartment in Willows. He was found unharmed. The second suspect, 35-year-old Esteban Esquivel, apparently fled before police arrived. He’s still wanted. His photo can be seen on the KQMS Facebook page.
