City of Redding officials say they’ll save a lot of money by refusing to accept a couple of major credit cards for utility payments. Beginning with the new year, commercial utility accounts can no longer be paid with Mastercard, and American Express will not be accepted for any type of account. The city council approved the changes in October. Apparently Mastercard and American Express charge processing fees that are 3-to-4 times more than Discover or Visa. The refusal to carry those two types of cards will save the city an estimated $250,000 a year.
