Boat Capsizes Along Mendocino Coast Killing Fort Bragg Man

FORT BRAGG, Calif. (AP) – A Fort Bragg man has died after his boat’s propeller became tangled in crab pots and capsized in rough seas along the Mendocino Coast. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that two survivors were rescued from the rough seas near Noyo Harbor on Saturday night, but 67-year-old Richard Mottlow’s body was not recovered until Sunday. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the boaters were returning to Noyo Harbor after collecting crab pots when their boat’s propeller became tangled in the lines, causing the vessel to lose power while entering the harbor. Rescuers had to rappel down steep cliffs to reach the two survivors and pull them from the water. Officials say all three victims had been wearing life jackets, but Mottlow’s body was found without one not far from the boat’s wreckage.
