Cal-Trans Delays 2nd Attempt At Bridge Demolition

The stubborn part of the Antlers Bridge that wouldn’t budge with the first round of explosives will be re-blasted on Saturday. Cal-Trans had previously planned on doing it Thursday. Around 700 pounds of C-4 type explosives was supposed to blow all the steel girders to pieces on Tuesday, but the southernmost span still stands. There must have been a miscalculation in what it would take to break through the 1940’s-era steel. Cal-Trans is saying the wet weather played a role in the failure. Engineers will place new charges and Saturday they’ll detonate them to finish the job. The lake channel beneath the bridge will remain closed until at least Sunday. The lake is being swept of debris and cranes are plucking the large pieces from the lake bottom after divers attach cables. The concrete pillars will be taken down later with wire saws and a crane.
