Union & Supervisors At Impasse Over Retiree Fee

A union representing more than a thousand Shasta County employees is at odds with the board of supervisors over continued negotiations.  UPEC Spokesman Chris Darker calls it “just another example of those at that very top taking care of themselves while those at the bottom pay for it.” He’s talking about a retiree administrative fee that’s deducted from the paychecks of the lowest paid workers, even though it’s already been eliminated for the highest paid elected and appointed officials. The union also has complaints about worker safety, saying the county is ignoring dangers and not taking precautions. Employees have been working without a contract while union and county negotiators try to untangle an impasse.
