County Workers May Vote To Strike

More than a thousand Shasta County employees will be voting on whether to go on strike. UPEC is at odds with the board of supervisors over continued negotiations. The UPEC-represented employees have been working without a contract since last April when the previous contract expired. Union and county negotiators are at an impasse over a retiree administrative fee that’s deducted from the paychecks of the lowest paid workers, even though it’s already been eliminated for the highest paid elected and appointed officials. The union also has complaints about worker safety, saying the county is ignoring dangers and not taking available precautions. The union members will vote on Monday and Tuesday evening and the results will be announced at a press conference set for Wednesday.
