Governor Declares State Of Emergency In 50 Counties

Tuesday Sheriff Tom Bosenko will ask the board of supervisors to declare a state of emergency due to recent storm damage, but that’s apparently just a formality because Monday the Governor did it for them. The proclamations cover 50 counties that were hit with flooding, mudslides, erosion and damage to roads and highways from December and January storms. Brown says “conditions of extreme peril” exist in the counties because of damage estimated in the Tens of Millions of Dollars. The declarations direct Caltrans to ask for immediate assistance through the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program. Brown also directs the State Office of Emergency Services to provide assistance to local governments. Shasta County Public Works Director Pat Minturn has reported more than $270,000 worth of infrastructure damage. Two costly storm-related incidents happened on January 9th. One of them was a huge mudslide on Big Bend Road. The other was on Whiskey Creek Road, where a culvert 13 feet in diameter washed out.
