A dog is a painful way to end a chase, as a Cottonwood man learned Wednesday afternoon. At 5:30PM a Shasta County Deputy tried to stop a speeding driver on the Southbound I-5 offramp to Deschutes Road. The driver didn’t stop, but led a chase onto Locust Road at 80 miles an hour to Cottonwood. Near the cross of Balls Ferry Road and Trefoil Lane the driver stopped and ran eastward into the thick blackberries and other brush. Not a problem for Thor the K-9, who picked up a trail and tracked down 27-year-old Travis Malbeck about 200 yards away. He was already on probation for felony evading. After a stop at a hospital Malbeck was booked into jail.
