Planned 64-Bed Jail Will Not Be Built

Shasta County will not be building a medium-security jail facility as previously planned. The dormitory-style 64-bed transitional lockup was to be built on the county campus on Breslauer Way in South Redding. In 2012 the Board of Supervisors turned down a 33-Million Dollar grant offered by the state to build a new jail right next to the existing jail. The decision not to build was based on the Millions of Dollars the county would have needed for annual operating expenses. The Breslauer Facility was sort of a pared-down lock-up alternative, but it’s being killed for the same reason, and a 20-Million Dollar grant will be kept by the state. First estimated at 1.2-Million Dollars annually, the estimate for operating costs has grown to nearly 4 Million. To go forward would have required a great deal of belt-tightening for other county departments, and could even have put the county at risk of bankruptcy. Ground breaking was set for April.
