Man Sentenced To 6 Years After Multiple DUI’s

A 35-year-old man who killed a teenager in a drunk driving crash has been sentenced after pleading guilty to his second DUI since the fatality. In 1999 at the age of 18, Edward James Batton was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He had been drunk while driving on Middletown Park Drive at 65 miles an hour in a 25 zone. He rolled his pickup truck, injuring himself and 2 of his passengers. The crash killed 15-year-old Shasta High student Dustin Grindstaff, who hadn’t been drinking and was the only one wearing a seatbelt.  Batton got one year in jail. His probation was almost done in 2004 when he got his second DUI and a 6 year prison sentence. In August of 2015 Batton was found unconscious behind the wheel of a running pickup truck with a utility trailer sitting in the middle of Texas Springs Road. He had been drinking and admitted to taking multiple prescription drugs. After pleading guilty on Friday Batton was sentenced to the maximum of 6 years in prison. He’s also awaiting sentencing for a botched robbery at knifepoint of a Napa Valley winery last year
