Footage Of Fatal Shooting Released Online

Video surveillance has surfaced online that shows the fatal shooting of a man at the Churn Creek Road and Hartnell Avenue intersection on the night of February 15th. The footage shows various angles from cameras at the Circle K Store. 45-year-old John Scott Souza, also known as John Larry Parks, can be seen walking his bicycle and approaching the driver’s side of a Geo Tracker as it sat alone in the left turn lane of westbound Hartnell waiting for a red light. Seconds later a muzzle flash can be seen from the gunshot, which was fired through the closed driver’s door window. Souza then stumbles around the back of the vehicle and collapses. After the shooting, 27-year-old Michael Lake called 9-1-1 and said he had just shot a man. Lake is a legal gun owner with a concealed weapons permit. He claimed he shot Souza in self defense, saying he feared for his safety. He has not been charged with a crime. The RPD investigation is still underway and police have not yet said if they know what led up to the dispute. Witnesses to the incident are still being sought.
