Alleged Thieves Face State & Federal Charges

A trio of thieves who stole about $50,000 worth of goods from the Forest Service has been arrested, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. On Monday of last week deputies recovered 2 snowmobiles near Hat 2 Powerhouse Road northeast of Burney. They looked abandoned but further investigation revealed they belonged to the federal government. That same day, a discovery was made that a Forest Service work center in Hat Creek had been broken into and various equipment including chain saws had been stolen. On Monday of this week another break-in of several buildings was discovered at the Hat Creek work center, with more equipment and utility vehicles taken. Sheriff’s Office I.D. Techs gathered evidence and three suspects were identified: Aaron and Lyna Phipps of Cassel and Joshua White of Burney. A probation search of the Phipps home was done and most of the Forest Service property was reportedly found. Joshua White wasn’t there but a deputy spotted him later in the day driving a pickup that had been seen in Forest Service surveillance video. Deputies allegedly found more stolen goods and almost an Ounce of Methamphetamine in the truck. The Forest Service will pursue state and federal charges against the three.
