Man Pleads Guilty To All Charges From Crash That Killed Young Girl

A 27-year-old Shasta Lake man could be sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to killing a 10-year-old girl in a drunk hit-and-run crash. Marley Johnson was riding in the passenger seat of a Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by her brother, 20-year-old Marcel Johnson on the evening of last January 28th. They were making a left turn from eastbound Hartnell onto Northwoods next to Parsons School when the car was broadsided by a Dodge Dakota pickup. Marley Johnson was killed in the crash. The driver, 26-year-old Charles Canfield, was driving at high speed after fleeing a hit-and-run crash that injured a Yellow Cab driver just moments earlier at Hartnell and Churn Creek. Canfield ran from the scene, running right past Marcel Johnson as he held his dying sister in his arms. Canfield was caught in the Hilltop area. Before the trail of destruction he had left a local bar with a blood alcohol content of .20. Canfield has a prior DUI conviction. His trial was about to start when he entered guilty pleas Monday to all charges, including second degree murder.  When he’s sentenced April 7th he could get 21 years to life in prison.
