Most Wanted Suspect Captured After Jumping Into River

One of Shasta County’s Most Wanted put himself through quite an ordeal Sunday, but he was caught anyway. At 1:45PM someone called police after seeing 39-year-old James Maynard walking with a woman near Cypress and Bechelli. Maynard was just added to this week’s most wanted list for false imprisonment with violence, violation of a domestic violence restraining order, and failure to pay child support. When officer responded and tried to talk to him, he and the woman took off running in different directions. Maynard jumped the freeway fence and ran across I-5 to the La Quinta Inn on Hilltop Drive but officers were already there so he ran back across the freeway, through a construction site and down a 200 foot cliff. He then jumped into the Sacramento River, at first trying to swim upriver against the current but then drifting down to hide in a thicket of poison oak and berry bushes. A CHP airplane spotted Maynard from above as a sheriff’s department boat delivered Redding Police to capture him. He was taken to Mercy Hospital to be treated for possible hypothermia before being booked into jail for resisting arrest, and on his 3 warrants. The woman was found along the riverbank near the Cypress Bridge. She had been sending Maynard text messages updating him on where the police were. She’s an alleged victim of one of Maynard’s pending cases.
