Parole granted to a Shasta County child killer has been denied by the governor. Ronald Hanes Jr. is serving a sentence of 19 years to life in prison for the brutal murder of a 3-year-old in 1994. The board of parole hearings this week used their newly-granted powers under Proposition 57 to grant parole to Hanes. Governor Jerry Brown, citing the heinous nature of the crime and what he calls Hanes lack of insight, reversed the board’s decision and ordered Hanes to remain behind bars. The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office wholeheartedly backs the decision.
