Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Killing Young Girl In DUI Crash

A 27-year-old Shasta Lake man has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty last month to killing a 10-year-old girl in a drunk hit-and-run crash. Marley Johnson was riding in the passenger seat of a Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by her brother, 20-year-old Marcel Johnson on the evening of last January 28th. They were making a left turn from eastbound Hartnell onto Northwoods next to Parsons School when the car was broadsided by a Dodge Dakota pickup. Marley was killed in the crash. The driver, 27-year-old Charles Canfield, was driving at high speed after fleeing a hit-and-run crash that injured a yellow cab driver just moments earlier at Hartnell and Churn Creek. Canfield took off on foot from the scene of the second crash, running right past Marcel Johnson as he held his dying sister in his arms.  Canfield was caught in the Hilltop area. Before the trail of destruction he had left a local bar with a blood alcohol content of .20. Canfield had a prior DUI conviction. He entered guilty pleas March 13th to all charges, including second degree murder. On Friday he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
