Police: Erratic Man Dies While Being Booked Into Jail

A man who was being booked into the Shasta County Jail died Tuesday afternoon, according to the Redding Police Department. Officers were called to Mercy Medical Center at about 4PM to check on a person who was reportedly running around the parking lot and acting erratically. By the time an officer arrived, Mercy security had already detained the man near the emergency room. Police say he was showing signs of being under the influence of narcotics and was taken into custody without incident. During the booking process at the jail, the man become unresponsive. Staff rendered medical aid and an ambulance was called. He was taken back to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The man’s identity will be released once his family has been notified. The Redding Police Investigations Division has launched an in-custody death investigation.
