Man Dies While Being Booked Into Shasta County Jail

The coroner’s office has released the name of a man who died while in custody at Shasta County Jail Tuesday afternoon. 58-year-old Richard Lee Roberson of Redding had reportedly been running around the parking lot of Mercy Medical Center and acting erratically.  Believing he was on drugs, Mercy security detained Roberson near the emergency room until Redding Police Officers arrived and took him into custody. They say no force was used during the arrest. During the booking process at the jail, Roberson become unresponsive.  staff rendered medical aid and an ambulance was called. Roberson was taken back to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem exam is scheduled. The Redding Police Investigations Division is conducting an in-custody death investigation.
