Alleged Killer Of Gas Station Cashier Wont Face Death Penalty

The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office will not seek capital punishment against a 39-year-old Redding man accused in the murder case of a Burney gas station cashier. David Wicks was killed December 21st while working at a Shell Station in Johnson Park.  Surveillance shows a person in a yellow rain suit torching wicks and the store. DNA testing led to Juan Manuel Venegas. No motive has been identified. Venegas is charged with premeditated murder with special circumstances, including a torture allegation. His trial date will likely be set Friday. The D.A.’s Office said Thursday that they won’t try for execution of Venegas.
