California Lawmakers Send Governor Bill Tied To Gas Tax Hike

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California lawmakers are sending the governor a bill to authorize over $900 million in projects linked to a gas tax increase, after a fast-tracked process. The state Assembly voted 50-24 Monday for the bill to fund train and highway improvements in the Central Valley and Riverside County. Promises of funding for the projects secured support from several lawmakers. The tax and vehicle fee increase is slated to generate $5.2 billion each year to fix crumbling roads. Assembly Republicans criticized the projects as “backroom deals.” A Republican senator and Democratic assemblyman from the Central Valley scored half a billion dollars in train and highway projects in their districts. Two Democrats from Riverside won more than $400 million for transportation improvements in their districts. The projects still need the governor’s signature.
