Search Continues For Body Of Missing Man In Siskiyou County

A body, presumably of a Happy Camp man, has still not been found despite being witnessed going down the river, followed by an intensive search. Early the evening of April 14th the family of 42-year-old Benjamin Camarena reported him missing to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, saying he had been riding his horse on Indian Creek Road, but the horse came home with an empty saddle. A short time earlier someone had reported seeing a dead body floating down Indian Creek. A deputy then saw the body go by in the swift moving water at the 2nd Avenue Bridge. It was seen again from Highway 96 at the confluence of Indian Creek and the Klamath River but an immediate search by the Sheriff’s Office and the CHP was unsuccessful. The search has continued for the last week-and-a-half with boats and divers and aircraft. A Coast Guard aerial search was done along the Klamath all the way from the coast to Happy Camp, and the National Guard has done air searches as well. Downriver searches have been done by Del Norte and Humboldt County Sheriff’s officials and the Karuk Tribe has recruited help from the Hoopa and Yurok Tribes but still no sign of the dead man has been found. The search continues, though. The water is very high and muddy but Sheriff Jon Lopey is hopeful, saying the level has dropped about a foot in the past week.
