Events Planned To Show Support Against Sexual Violence

People of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to show solidarity against sexual violence with Wednesday’s “Denim Day” and “Take Back The Night”. Hosted by a coalition coordinated by “One Safe Place”, the events will be at the Shasta College Quad. “Denim Day” represents a case from 1999 in which the Italian high court overturned a sexual assault conviction, saying the victim needed to help the attacker get her tight jeans off, and thereby consented to the rape. The next day, Italians throughout the court system and the community wore jeans in protest of the ruling. An educational event that addresses consent, transforming rape culture and bystander intervention will take place in the Shasta College Quad from Noon to 2PM Wednesday. A dance will be held promoting community and consent from 4PM to 5:30PM. Wednesday evening’s “Take Back The Night” event is from 5:30PM to 8:30PM with speakers, resources, a candlelight vigil and more.
